We’re working on a family room makeover {well, I say the term “working” loosely because it’s actually on hold while we renovate an apartment} but I did manage to finish a decorative accent for our family room.
Materials:
- Old headboard
- Gorilla Wood Glue
- Bessy ESZ Clamps (Rockler)
- TransTint Dye
- Vinyl stencil (created using Silhouette Cameo)
- Craft paint and small brush or paint pen
What I did:
Repair/prep
The headboard was in very poor condition, broken and falling apart. I removed the legs.
The wood veneer was peeling away {and stapled in places}, so I removed all of the veneer and removed staples.
There were a few cracks in the wood which I filled the cracks with Gorilla Wood Glue. I love it’s water-based formula (easy clean up) and “tough” holding power. It only takes about 20-30 minutes of clamp time to move forward with a project (24 hours to cure).
Then used these awesome HUGE Bessy ESZ clamps {sold at Rockler} to push the wood together. The Bessy ESZ clamps were super easy to use one-handed with pistol style handles. No problems with increasing the grip and super easy to release.
After the glue was dry, I applied my vinyl stencil. My vinyl wouldn’t stick, so I traced the letters using a pencil.
Then hand painted my words tracing the pencil marks with a paint pen and filling in with craft paint and let it dry.
Then, I sanded the wood down and gave it a coat of TransTint dye (dark mission brown) to age it. {oops…forgot to snap a picture of this step!}
Once the dye dried, we located the studs above our family room French doors. We drilled pilot holes into the headboard and using drywall screws, hung the my new headboard pediment.
